How To Be Successful In This Class
Citizenship Grading
The citizenship rubric is available on page 12 of the Lewis Middle School Planner. The citizenship marks are Exceeds (E), Meets (M), Inconsistent (I) and Unsatisfactory (U). Citizenship grades will be reduced upon the third tardy and/or the third late assignment per nine-week grading period.
Assignments (40%)
All assignments, quizzes and chapter tests will be listed on Google Classroom under the Classwork tab. Parents can have students’ login to Google Classroom and show them what we are doing. Assignments will be assigned every day, as it provides students with an opportunity to engage with the material from class that day. Some assignments will be completed using the graphing notebook or the RPJ (workbook) so that students can show their work. Other assignments will be completed online using the Big Ideas Math Website (BIMW). All assignments will be due the following morning in which they were assigned by 7 AM.
Assessments (60%)
Generally, there will be a quiz and/or chapter test for each chapter covered during the school year. Each chapter will conclude with a chapter test, prior to the chapter test a practice chapter test will be given. Students will need to gauge their readiness for the chapter test by their performance on the practice test and then make an effort to seek remediation accordingly. Quizzes and chapter tests will be due at the end of the class period in which they are assigned.
Late Work
Late work will be accepted with no penalty if submitted within one week of the due date. If a student earns less than 85% on a quiz or chapter test, they may retake the assessment within one week of the due date to earn a score up to 85%. Students will need to send an email or Google Classroom message to Mr. Thompson requesting to retake a quiz and/or chapter test. If a student has been absent from school because of a long-term illness, other type of excused absence and/or extenuating circumstances then alternative arrangements might be available, please arrange for a conference with Mr. Thompson.
Minimum Grade Requirement
For students to remain on the Accelerated Math Pathway they will need to maintain an A or B average. I will reach out if a student slips below a B for a period of time and provide suggestions for what steps can be taken to remedy the situation. If improvements are not made, we will conference to see if the Accelerated Course is the correct placement, and a move may be made at the semester or at the end of the year.
Grading Scale
A=100-90 B=89-80 C=79-70 D=69-60 F=below 60

You will become knowledgeable of the 7th and 8th grade California Common Core Math standards which include the domains of: The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
Classroom Procedures
- Be on time, in your assigned seat with your materials out before the tardy bell rings.
- You should come to class with a willingness to learn.
- Pay attention and do not talk while someone else is speaking.
- Ask questions if you do not understand the lesson and seek help.
- Respect the rights of others around you.
- Do not eat, drink or chew gum in class.
- Do not use your phone or any other electronic devices in the classroom unless directed to do so by Mr. Thompson.
How To Be Successful In This Class
- You are required to bring your Record and Practice Journal (RPJ), computer and your graphing notebook to class every day. You will not be required to bring your textbook to class.
- These things will be used daily in class: pencil and eraser, student planner, graphing notebook, independent reading book, and a calculator (an inexpensive four function, no graphing or scientific functions necessary).
- You and your parent/guardian should feel free to contact me any time either of you have a question or concern. I have found e-mail to be an excellent conduit for parent/guardian communication.
- Mathematics can be a challenging subject and you may need some sort of additional support. You are welcome to come into my room outside of class time when I am available. I will usually be available during lunch time. It is highly recommended that students have access to their own math tutor (parent, older sibling, neighbor etc.) who is able work individually with him or her for extended time periods.
- It is your responsibility to find out what you missed if you were absent and make up the missed assignment (s).
